The basics of copyright notice.

This content is about copyright notice. If you are looking for information on community policy infringement warnings, which are different from copyright infringement warnings, see our Community Policy Infringement Warnings Basics.

If you receive a copyright warning, it means that the copyright owner has submitted a complete and valid legal removal request to use your copyrighted material. When we receive such formal notice, we remove your video in compliance with copyright law.

A video may contain only one copyright warning at a time. Please note that the video may be removed from the site for reasons other than copyright. In addition, Content ID claims do not generate alerts.

Deleting an alert video will not resolve your alert. Learn more about how to resolve copyright infringement warnings.

What happens when you receive a copyright infringement warning?

We all make mistakes. When you receive a copyright alert, it serves as a warning. When you first receive a copyright infringement warning, you must go through copyright school. Copyright School helps creators understand copyright and how it applies to YouTube.

Copyright infringement warnings can affect your ability to make money. In addition, if your active livestream has been removed due to copyright, your access to the livestream will be limited to 7 days.

If you receive 3 warnings for copyright infringement:

  • Your account, along with the associated channels, is subject to cancellation.
  •  All content uploaded to your channel will be removed.
  •  You cannot create new channels.

Thanks for the term

If your channel is part of the YouTube Partner Program, you are eligible for a 7-day courtesy visit. After 3 warnings for copyright infringement, you will have 7 more days to take action before deactivating your channel. During this period, your copyright notices will not expire and you will not be able to upload new videos. Your channel will remain active and you can access it to find a solution to your alerts. If you reply, your channel will not be deactivated until the dispute is resolved. If the dispute is resolved in your favor or the claim is withdrawn, your channel will not be affected.

How to find information about your alert.

  1. Log in to YouTube Studio.
  2. In the left menu, click Content.
  3. Filter copyright claims.
  4. Navigate to "Copyright Claims" in the Restrictions column and click View Details.

Resolve copyright warnings.

There are three ways to resolve a copyright warning:

  1. Wait for it to expire - Copyright alerts will expire after 90 days. If this is your first warning, you will need to complete copyright school.
  2. Get a refund: You can contact the person who claimed your video and ask them to withdraw their copyright infringement claim.
  3. Submit a counterclaim: If you believe your video has been removed by mistake or is eligible for proper use, you can file a counterclaim.

 Submit a copyright response.

If you upload copyrighted material to YouTube without the permission of the copyright owner, it may be removed. If you believe your video has been removed by mistake, you can submit a copyright response.

The counterclaim is a legal request from YouTube to restore a video that was removed for alleged copyright infringement.

Before filing a counterclaim, you should know:

  • The person uploading the original video or an agent authorized to act on their behalf, such as a lawyer, must file a counterclaim.
  • Submit a counterclaim only if your video has been removed due to content misidentification or misidentification, even in case of misuse. Don't reply/response for any-other reason.
  • If your video does not meet the above criteria, you can wait up to 90 days for your copyright infringement warning to expire. You can request that the copyright owner withdraw his / her copyright infringement claim by contacting the copyright owner directly.
  • Non-video content must be accompanied by a counter-notification, such as comments or channel banner images, via a free form counter-claim.

Note: Since Google hosts channel profile images, you will need to submit feedback notices for channel profile images via Google's web form.

 Set up your counter
YouTube requires that your countermeasures:

  1. Follow all legal requirements.
  2. Explain in your own words your right to use copyrighted material. If you believe the content has been identified as a bug, please explain clearly and concisely why.

Evaluate copyrighted material.
Your counterclaim must include a description of the specific content claimed in your video. To find out these details:

  1. Log in to YouTube Studio.
  2. In the left menu, select Content.
  3. Select Filter and then Copyright Claims.
  4. In the Restrictions column, navigate to the copyright claim next to your video.
  5. Click View Details.

Before filing a counterclaim, consider the following:

  • Who owns the content?
  • If you have used someone else's copyright work, can you prove your license or allow the use of this material?
  • Is the use of your content protected by fair use, fair dealing, or similar copyright exceptions?
  • Is the content in the public domain?

Submit an answer
To submit a copyright response:

  1. Log in to YouTube Studio.

  4. In the Restrictions column, navigate to the copyright claim.
  5. Click View Details.
  6. Under Actions, click Select Action, and then click Reply.
  7. Enter your contact information and justification.
    • Be sure to include your full physical address and your full legal name.
    • If your counter-claim lacks the necessary information, it may be rejected.
  8. Click Submit.

By submitting a counter-claim, you agree to share your information with the complainant.

If your account has been suspended for copyright infringement, you will not be able to submit a counter-claim by following the steps above. You can try to send a free form reply.

What happens next?
Your counter claim will be sent to the claim-ant if it verify all legal requirements and clearly shows your right to use the content. In most cases, we will not send a counter claim to any party other than the original complainant. If a counter claim is forwarded, it will include the complete text, including any personal details you have entered.

Complainant has 10 business days under copyright law to respond to your counterclaim. They will have to respond with proof that they have taken legal action to prevent content from being restored on YouTube.
